Please Help Us Provide a Refuge for Cats and Dogs
The S.P.A. provides a safe place for its resident animals. While we are always hopeful that each one will become part of a loving home, the possibility dwindles as the years roll on. Twelve of our dogs have been with us for more than 4 years and 4 of our cats have been here for more than 3 years. It is possible (and, in some cases, likely) that the only home they will have is the S.P.A. with love provided by our wonderful volunteers. Because we are a no-kill shelter, we will take care of all our animals as long as they need us. As these cats and dogs age, they may require extra care, as we imagine many of our supporters will likely understand.
We house an average of 50 cats and 50 dogs, formerly homeless and stray San Miguel de Allende animals. They count on us and you to provide food, care, and shelter for them, no matter how long they remain at the S.P.A., despite the additional expense that comes with aging. We know our generous, kind-hearted, animal-loving supporters won’t let them down. Over the years, our supporters like you have made it possible for the S.P.A. to exist. Please invest again in the S.P.A.
One of the dogs who has been with us for too long (5 years) is Nellie, an amazing dog with a noble demeanor. She sits in a sphinx-like position, head up and alert, body relaxed, and waits her turn for a walk. Easygoing with other dogs, she is gentle and prefers a quiet environment. She adores playing fetch with a ball and will tirelessly bring it back and drop it in your hand or at your feet, waiting for the next throw. If there is a ball in sight, she’ll likely bring it to you to initiate the game. She is non-demanding, but enjoys attention and petting. At 7 years old, she is lovely—slim, medium-sized, and honey-colored, with a touchingly sweet personality. She has been at the S.P.A. since she was 2 years old. We very much hope she will spend the rest of her life in a loving home.
Our eight-year-old Martin is so handsome that new S.P.A. visitors always notice him first. How can this gorgeous gray and white boy still be here year after year? Actually, he was adopted unsuccessfully twice, each time exhibiting the same pattern of hiding under the bed, then refusing to eat, use the litterbox, or groom himself, seemingly in the throes of a feline nervous breakdown. Returned to the S.P.A., he regally greeted all his friends, posed dramatically in the middle of the room, and happily resumed grooming his luxuriant coat, eating, and fastidiously using the litter box. No other adopters ever took a chance on him and now, after so many years, we know that for him, the S.P.A. is his preferred home where he is welcome to stay for the rest of his life. Fortunately, almost all our cats want to be adopted, but for cats like Martin, we are able to provide a lifetime of care.
WE NEED YOUR HELP FOR NELLIE, MARTIN, AND OTHERS! The S.P.A. is the only no-kill shelter in San Miguel de Allende. For over 37 years, we have been committed to maintaining a refuge for animals who can’t ask for help themselves. We average 200 adoptions per year to loving homes. Our on-site clinic provides veterinary services, facilitating animal health even for those animals who are not in our shelter. We offer education and community service opportunities to area children, helping the next generation to love and appreciate animals. None of this could happen without the financial help we receive from you, our generous supporters. Donations are our only source of income. We do not receive any government support. The annual cost of caring for our animals and the beloved pets of our clients can exceed 2,000,000 pesos.
PLEASE DONATE! Any amount you choose will help us continue our work. All funds received will be used to support our animals and to keep the doors of the S.P.A. open to help others. If you’d like, you may specify that your gift be used to help defray the cost of a particular item for our shelter animals—for example, medications, vaccinations, sterilizations, food, treats, blankets, dog and cat supplies, and/or toys. You may choose to sponsor a doggy or kitty “casita” ($360.00 USD or peso equivalent per year) or give a donation to apply to clinic expenses.
Donate immediately through PayPal by clicking the “Donate” button at the bottom of this page (just under our address). On the screen that opens, you need to fill in an amount to get to the login screen or to create a PayPal account. For additional options for how to donate, please open the End of Year Appeal file below by clicking on it. We hope you will consider making as generous a gift as you can. Thank you for doing your part to help. We cannot do it without YOU
